Our Story

In the summer of 1970, at the prime age of 15, Edward Berlin started working for his Aunt Bernice and Uncle Sam at Acme Restaurant Supply. Ed spent his teens working at Acme in the summers, learning the ins and outs of the restaurant supply business. When it was time to go to college, Ed decided to attend USC, where he went on to graduate with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

After graduation, Ed brought his new knowledge back to his family at Acme. It wasn’t long before Ed found success selling the largest equipment order in Acme’s history to East Bay Trading Company. After building a relationship with East Bay, Ed decided to venture out from the family business and he took a new position as Kitchen Manager at East Bay Trading. While there, he learned the ins and outs of working in a restaurant kitchen; everything from the type of equipment needed to the importance of building relationships with fellow Charleston sous chefs.

In 1986, Ed opened his own store with six employees, which included long time mentor and coworker, Jack Ferguson. During this time, Edward’s brother, Ellison, was attending the College of Charleston pursuing a degree in Business Administration. When Ellison graduated in 1987, he joined big brother Edward and Berlin’s Restaurant Supply, Inc. was born.

Since Berlin’s opened their doors over 30 years ago they have been dedicated to one thing, providing the Charleston foodservice industry with the tools they need for success. This includes more than just quality products. It is a commitment to support our customers with stellar service and face to face consultation, from the start of their design to opening night and throughout their years.
